Chicago Fire Season 8 premiere episode surprised everyone with an unexpected twist. Otis (Yuriy Sardarov) is now gone, and Brett (Kara Killmer) may have a hard time to accept the truth. As his death may continuously be felt in the future episodes, what will happen from here?

"Lt. Casey (Jesse Spencer) struggles to get Chief Boden (Eamonn Walker) to sign off on an energetic new recruit. Against her better judgment, Foster (Annie Ilonzeh) extends an olive branch to her irritating new medic," Chicago Season 8 Episode 2 official synopsis read. "Otis inspires Herrmann (David Eigenberg) to seek new partners at Molly's. Brett realizes life in Fowlerton will take some getting used to."

It will be hard for everyone to accept that Otis is now gone, especially for Brett. But, aside from his demise, Brett also has a lot of issues to face in the new episode. She is now separated from Firehouse 51 as she returns to Fowlerton.

Although Brett has a new gig in her old hometown, she will be more frustrated as she is about to meet her frenemy, Hope (Eloise Mumford). According to CarterMatt, Hope may bring more chaos to Brett's life in Chicago Season 8 Episode 2. Hope pretends she will be there for Brett for friendship's sake, but the latter knows her so well.

Meanwhile, talking about the new season premiere, showrunner Derek Haas revealed the reason why the show decided to kill a beloved character. To recall, the previous season finale ended with a major cliffhanger by putting several Firehouse 51 firefighters in jeopardy. Unfortunately, Otis didn't survive the ordeal.

Otis' demise is said to be the biggest death that happened to the show after Shae (Lauren German) died in Season 3. Haas told CinemaBlend Otis' death was not planned yet at the time the Season 7 finale aired. Hence, there were a lot of guesses about who among the firefighters might get killed in the new season premiere.

People behind the show didn't even drop some clues about who among the characters would meet its demise as the big death was yet to be decided. So why did they choose Otis?

Haas explained that as Otis had been a part of the show since the very beginning, his death would guarantee fans would always be on the edge when they see new cliffhangers in the future. Chicago Season 8 Episode 2, "A Real Shot in the Arm," is set to be out on Wednesday, Oct. 2, on NBC.
