The previous season sets the stage for Peaky Blinders Season 6 after a major cliffhanger that put Thomas Shelby's life in jeopardy. Aside from the threat of killing himself, someone also betrayed him, and it remains to be a big mystery who could it be. In an interview with the lead actor Cillian Murphy, he talked about what happened in Season 5 and praised the show creator Steven Knight.
"Steven Knight is very smartly commenting on what is happening in the world politically, but doing it through the prism of history, which is a much smarter, a much more elegant way of dealing with it," Murphy told Newsweek about the screenwriter's take of the series. The previous season had been more politically charged as it dealt with the rise of fascism in Britain and with Oswald Mosley (Sam Claflin).
Despite what was happening, add to that Tommy's struggles with PTSD after WWI, he chose to keep going and facing the battle of his own. Murphy revealed his character never expects to live forever. When he finds himself alive every day, for him, it is only a bonus.
The previous season ended with the boldest cliffhanger in the show's history, as Tommy seemed to have lost his mind. He even poised to kill himself after someone betrayed him during his assassination attempt on Oswald. But, would Tommy really kill himself and who double-crossed him? These things set up the stage for Peaky Blinders Season 6.
Tommy's plan to assassinate Oswald failed when Aberama (Aiden Gillen) got stabbed, and Barney (Cosmo Jarvis) got shot. It remained to be revealed who planned his failure, although he screamed something about the Chinese, Jimmy (Brian Gleeson) and Special Branch, when he had a meltdown. So who are the possible suspects?
According to Digital Spy, Oswald himself might have planned of the unfortunate event. He might have an idea about the assassination; thus, he had the fascist party stopped. With the high-level of his intel, it is possible he pre-empted Tommy's plan with his own attack.
It is also possible Michael (Finn Cole) and Gina Gray (Anya Taylor-Joy) were the ones who betrayed Tommy. By the looks of it, Michael could be the next antagonist in Peaky Blinders Season 6 although there are questions if he would attack the family and his father-in-law.
Fans saw Billy Grade (Emmett J Scanlan) picking up the phone after he revealed about the shooting of Oswald. Hence, he might be the one who double-crossed Tommy following the anger he felt when Arthur (Paul Anderson) talked about his wife.
There are a lot of suspects on who could possibly betray Tommy. As this is where Season 5 ended, the realy culprit would surely be revealed in Peaky Blinders Season 6 when it comes out, probably, next year.
