Steven Universe season 6 is likely happening, despite lack of confirmation. The previous season of the animated series concluded in January 2019, so some fans were worried the show might not be coming back on Cartoon Network. However, show creator Rebecca Sugar hinted that the sixth installment is just delayed -- not canceled.

Steven Universe season 6 has no official release date at the moment, though Steven Universe: The Movie was released on September 2, 2019. So, if the sixth installment will definitely happen, viewers will most likely expect a mid-2020 release. Since the movie is now out, production for the upcoming season could start anytime soon.

Perhaps, the reason why Steven Universe season 6 has been delayed is because of the movie. It's possible the production team was busy with the film, thus setting aside the sixth installment. The crew members behind the animation film were the same ones who worked for the series. Hence, they're all preoccupied with the production of the movie.

As for the potential plot, Steven Universe season 6 will likely kick off from the time when Steven learned about his real identity. Now that he knows his true self, it would help him realize many things -- such as how he lives his life. In a podcast, former crew member Jones-Quartey also shared his knowledge and some details about the upcoming installment.

"The thing about Steven Universe is that it's coming off an age story, and this is something Steven has to figure out to start making decisions for himself," Quartey said, as reported by TV Season & Spoilers.

In addition, some fans speculated the potential new season might be introducing a more matured Steven. The speculation started after the film introduced a 16-year-old boy Steven, which was set a few years later following the events in the fifth season. In the movie, the titular character is a grown-up kid; sporting a new look, and a neck.

However, it's worth noting that all of these were just speculations as there were no confirmed details about Steven Universe season 6. Yet, fans are still hopeful after Sugar teased Steven Universe: The Movie "is not the end" for the franchise. The show creator told TVLine that there will be "more" and everything that happened "will continue to matter" in true Steven Universe fashion.

Steven Universe debuted on Cartoon Network in November 2013, and it is the first animated series of the network created entirely by a woman. The animated series follows the Crystal Gems, a team of magical beings and self-appointed guardians of the Universe. The Crystal Gems comprises Garnet, Pearl, Amethyst, and the group's "little brother," Steven.
