Sky Castle was the biggest winner in the 2019 Korea Drama Awards after notching several victories under its belt to cap off its successful television run on JTBC that peaked at 23.8 percent. KPop star Ong Seong Wu also earned his first acting awards at the event.
According to a report by Soompi, Sky Castle picked up the win for Best Drama for the series, which centered around rich families who are obsessed with higher education. Like the series' rise from 1 percent viewership to its record numbers, the drama won the favor of the award-giving body to nab top prizes.
Sky Castle also gave Kim Bo Ra a victory for Popular Female Character Award and Kim Seo Hyung for the Hot China Award. The drama also won for Best OST.
KPop idol Ong Seong Wu also proved his skills in acting by earning the Best New Actor Award for his lead role in high school drama Moments of 18. The former Wanna One member also won the Hallyu Star Award, which reflected the positive reviews he received for his acting opposite Kim Hyang Gi. His Moments of 18 co-star Kang Ki Young was honored as one of the Male Excellence Awardees of the night for his role as a temporary homeroom adviser for Ong Seong Wu's class in the drama.
Kang Ki Young tied with Doctor John's Lee Kyu Hyung for the Male Excellence Award. SBS action drama The Fiery Priest also picked up two victories for Ahn Chang Hwan (Popular Male Character Award) and Go Joon for Star of the Year. Go Joon is tied with Shin Ye Eun from tvN's He Is Psychometric while Doctor Prisoner's Kwon Nara won the Best New Actress Award.
The Best Script Award went to Jo Jung Sun (KBS 2TV's "Mother Of Mine"), while Jung Dong Hwan received the Lifetime Achievement Award. He was part of the supernatural drama Hotel Del Luna.
The Female Excellence Award went to Lee Se Young for The Crowned Clown, while the Male Top Excellence Award was given to Kim Dong Wook for his role in MBC's Special Labor Inspector, Mr. Jo.
The Female Top Excellence Award was given to Kim Min Jung for her portrayal in KBS's My Fellow Citizens. Finally, the most coveted Grand Excellence Award was awarded to Choi Soo Jong for his role in My Only One. In his speech, he thanked the collective effort of everyone who worked on the drama and promised to work harder for his future roles.
