If Foxtel was able to resurrect Joan "The Freak" Ferguson from the grave for Wentworth Season 8, why not Bea Smith? This is what a fan of Danielle Cormack and her Wentworth character believe.
A fan, named Sarah Walker, started a petition on Change.org asking Wentworth executive producer Jo Porter and the series writers to bring back Bea Smith (Danielle Cormack) in the series. Avid fans of Wentworth could recall that Bea used to be the central character in the Australian TV drama until Joan "The Freak" Ferguson (Pamela Rabe) killed her in Season 4.
The Wentworth story was initially focused on Bea's incarceration and her subsequent rise to the top of the prison's hierarchy. Bea is a domestic violence victim. Her husband, Harry, abused her.
Bea went to prison after murdering Brayden Holt to avenge the death of her daughter. She eventually became the top dog in Wentworth Prison and rival to Franky Doyle (Nicole da Silva), Jacs Holt (Kris McQuade), Kaz Proctor (Tammy MacIntosh), and Joan Ferguson (Pamela Rabe).
In the petition, Walker pointed out that the first four seasons of Wentworth with Bea Smith were the best of the series. The fan expressed disappointment when the rumored return of the character in Season 7 did not happen.
Now that it is confirmed that Joan Ferguson is returning in Wentworth Season 8, Walker said in her petition that it is also right for Cormack to reprise her role. The fan also noted that a team-up with Rita would also be a good idea.
"She [Bea] has unfinished business with The Freak. It is time we could have her team up with Rita... Right the wrong. Bring Bea back and send Wentworth off into the sunset with a bang. It's what the fans want," Walker wrote on her petition. The petition has almost 400 signatures as of writing.
This is not the first fan petition that asked for the return of Bea Smith in the series. After Season 4 finale in 2016, fans also feel there are more stories to tell about the character and should not have written off.
As The Freak is returning in Wentworth Season 8, could fans expect another showdown between her and Bea? Joan Ferguson supposed to have died in Season 5, but she reappeared in Season 7 finale.
Porter previously confirmed The Freak's return. She also praised the series writers for brilliantly coming up with the idea on how to resurrect the character.
Could the same thing happen to Bea? She was last seen lying in a pool of her blood after Joan Ferguson stabbed her.
Viewers and TV critics have praised Cormack for her portrayal of Bea Smith for four seasons. She received both an ASTRA Award and Australia's prestigious LOGIE award in 2015 for playing the character.
