When Prince William is crowned the King of England, his wife, Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, will naturally become the Queen of England. A royal expert, however, said that the Cambridge royals will have to justify being in these positions because these are no longer their God-given rights.
Speaking in the documentary Kate: The Making Of A Modern Queen, royal expert Katie Nicholl said that the God-given right to the throne is an antiquated concept today. Queen Elizabeth was in this unique position when she took the right to the heart and ascended the throne in 1952.
Over the years, however, Her Majesty showed how she never took her role for granted and, thus, earned the public's respect and admiration. During her coronation, Queen Elizabeth promised to live up to her God-given right by serving England until her death. So, despite her age, Her Majesty hasn't stopped with her royal duties and vowed that she would never abdicate the throne.
It is this resolve that would be challenging for Duchess Kate and Prince William to uphold once they become the king and queen. According to McNicholl, the Cambridge royals need to begin cultivating an image of why they deserve to reign England because, by that time, public opinion will matter and shape their future roles.
For McNicholl, Prince William and Duchess Kate have to be hardworking representatives of the U.K. They need to become the King and Queen of the people.
Prince William and Duchess Kate would only take the throne after Prince Charles, the heir to the throne, succeeds Queen Elizabeth. Biographer Sally Bedell Smith, however, said, Duchess Kate is ready for her future role.
Bedell Smith told People that the duchess has been successfully following in the examples of both Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Mother's life. She has been humble and discreet, like both monarchs. She has served her causes well and carefully avoided controversies. She embraced style and got along with her in-laws. She has also been a supportive spouse to Prince William and would never overshadow his image.
Aside from grace and poise, the duchess also knows and a deep curiosity for the issues raised to the royal family. For Bedell Smith, Duchess Kate has gained tons of experience and witness plenty of occasions on how to be a queen, and she has become well-aware of what her future duties and responsibilities would entail.
