Will the sons of Prince Charles, Prince William and Prince Harry, inherit his titles once he becomes the King of England? Apparently, he won't be able to give his title the Prince of Wales to Prince Harry once he assumes the monarchy after Queen Elizabeth.
Fans on Quora have discussed the possibility that Prince Charles would name his second-born son, Prince Harry, the Prince of Wales. Could the heir apparent do this and grant his first-born Prince William a different title?
According to a royal history buff, the title of Prince of Wales is only accorded to the heir apparent, which is solely the eldest son of the monarch. Such is the case today with Prince Charles being the eldest son of Queen Elizabeth.
Prince William will automatically be named the Prince of Wales when their father Prince Charles becomes king. The only time Prince Harry could carry this title is if Prince William and his three children -- Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis -- all die before him, which would be improbable.
This title, Prince of Wales, has been given to the heir apparent since the 14th century for honor and dignity. There is no public role or responsibility attached to this. However, the Prince of Wales is expected to assist the monarch of England and represent the crown during state dinners, foreign assemblies, and visits.
Prince Charles has been the longest-serving Prince of Wales. Before him, his Uncle Edward held the title until he became Edward VIII, but he later abdicated the crown. Edward did not have any children.
When Prince Charles' grandfather, Albert, became King George VI after Edward abdicated, Queen Elizabeth, Albert's eldest child, became the heir apparent. However, the queen was never given the title Princess of Wales on her 18th birthday, as traditions would have had it. History records will show that politicians opposed this, along with the King, as the title belonged to the wife of the Prince of Wales when Elizabeth was going to be the future queen.
Meanwhile, Prince William will also inherit his father's dukedom as the Duke of Cornwall when Prince Charles becomes king. Prince Harry, on the other hand, will remain the Duke of Sussex for all his life. He won't be receiving new titles when their father is the new monarch.
However, Prince Harry will have bigger responsibilities with this shift as he matures into the royal family. When Prince William's children have kids of their own, Prince Harry's spot in the line of succession, as his son, Archie, will change since the Cambridge family, not the Sussexes, is in the direct line to the throne.
