Prince Charles and Princess Diana did not have a fairy tale marriage. While affairs marred their union on both sides, there was a time that Prince William and Harry's dad and mom were loving and affectionate towards each other.

Rare photos showing Prince Charles and Princess Diana were unearthed on Instagram by fans of the British monarchy. The selections showed how the two royals, in their younger years as a married couple, exchanged kisses, loving looks, and had moments of public displays of affection.

One photo showed Princess Diana sitting on her husband's lap during a gathering. She had on a big smile, and Prince Charles also looked extremely happy as he cradled his wife. His arm was comfortably wrapped around her waist while she had one hand on his left shoulders.

Another photo showed Prince Charles and Princess Diana sitting quietly together. He reached out for his wife's hand to kiss it in front of the public. This was around the mid-80s, but Prince Charles was reportedly having his affair with a former girlfriend, Camilla Parker-Bowles.

The affair was not a secret to Princess Diana, though. She confronted Camilla about her romance with Prince Charles. By the early 1990s, the cracks of their marriage became public even as the palace tried hard to downplay the rumors. It also sparked stories that Prince Charles will not be made king because he's separated.

Prince Charles' reputation was further damaged in public after transcripts of his secretly-recorded phone conversations with Camilla was published in a magazine. Diana also had her fair share of controversy when her conversations with a man named James Gilbey were also published.

To fix his image, Prince Charles agreed to be filmed and followed by a documentary filmmaker. In it, he admitted that he was faithful and honorable to his wife but admitted that their marriage broke down despite working at it. Princess Diana, on the other hand, also had her tell-all interview where she said there were three of them in their marriage.

Princess Diana and Prince Charles finalized their divorce in 1996. A year later, she died in a tragic car crash and was mourned by people all over the world. It was for this reason that Prince Charles delayed introducing Camilla to the public as his legitimate partner, aside from getting Queen Elizabeth's approval.

When Prince Charles becomes king after Queen Elizabeth, Camilla will not carry the title of Queen of England. Instead, she will be titled as the Princess Consort.
