Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s documentary called Harry & Meghan: An African Journey aired last week and they revealed a lot of things about not only the trip bout about themselves as well. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex gave their most candid interviews to date in the ITV program.
One of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s revelation was their desire to live in South Africa. The Duke of Sussex toyed with the idea of swapping Frogmore Cottage in Windsor for life in South Africa.
"I don’t know where we could live in Africa at the moment," Prince Harry told Tom Bradby. "We've just come from Cape Town, that would be an amazing place for us to be able to base ourselves, of course it would."
However, royal expert Victoria Arbiter said that this is far from happening. So, just how realistic for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to leave Kensington Palace behind with their firstborn Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor?
If you’re a regular person, moving from one place to another is no big deal. But, if you’re a member of the royal family, it’s definitely a whole new story.
“That’s just not going to be OK unless, of course, they renounce all of their royal privileges, their royal titles, everything to do with their life as a member of the royal family,” Victoria said. “I don’t see that happening, either.”
The royal expert also pointed out that there are so many things to consider if Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will indeed move to South Africa. “In the documentary, Meghan talks about the grass always being greener, but there are logistics that come into play when you’re a member of the royal family,” she said. “Some of them are a little bit more obvious. So they move to South Africa, so who pays for their security there?”
Victoria, then, stated that even, though Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are wealthy as a couple and as individuals, their money is not going to be the issue. What concerns her is who would pay for their security? “Is the South African taxpayer suddenly paying for their security, or is the British taxpayer paying for that? Neither party are going to be particularly happy,” she said.
For now, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle moving to South Africa is nothing but an idea. Until the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and the Buckingham Palace confirm the decision, this remains wishful thinking.
