Princess Diana thought that her marriage would be mended when she gave birth to her second child, Prince Harry. However, the baby's arrival only triggered the unhappiness that the Princess of Wales felt with her husband, Prince Charles.
According to Princess Diana's former butler Paul Burrell, Prince Harry's mother was crying herself to sleep on the night she gave birth to her second child. Apparently, Prince Charles seemed cold when he saw the baby and only commented on his red hair. He quickly left the house to go to the theatre.
It was evident from there that Prince Harry was born into a marriage that didn't have love and happiness. At that time, Prince Charles was already carrying an affair with Camilla Parker-Bowles.
Burrell's statements were supported by royal author Katie Nicholl, who wrote in her 2010 book that Prince Charles "snubbed" the birth of his second-born child. Princess Diana admitted to another biographer, Andrew Morton, that she felt something inside her died because of how Prince Charles behaved.
Princess Diana also, apparently, had to hide the gender of her second baby from her husband because Prince Charles wanted to have a daughter for his second child. According to reports, Prince Charles was "so disappointed" when Prince Harry was born. However, when he had to face the press, Prince Charles marvelled at his second-born and even his red hair, a physical trait common to Lady Diana's side of the family.
But, there was a time when Princess Diana and Prince Charles' marriage was a happy one, albeit only briefly. It was during their honeymoon phase as newlyweds and the arrival of their first-born child, Prince William.
The future King of England was, however, mostly infatuated with Camilla since his younger years. Biographers said that, on the night of his wedding to Princess Diana, he still professed his love for Camilla in secret. He would later marry her in 2005 and she would become the Duchess of Cornwall.
Princess Diana, who knew about the affair as early as 1986, would also engage in her own extra-marital affairs. Though she confronted Camilla and sought the Queen's help about Prince Charles, Her Majesty would only command that they divorce after Princess Diana made that explosive tell-all interview. Before that, she and Prince Charles have been living separate lives but the Queen, reportedly, had to intervene when Lady Di told the public every detail about her unhappy marriage.
