Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already indicated that the chance is slim for Manchester United to get a good deal in time for the January transfer window so he is more excited about what the 2020 summer will bring. However, it might be that the Red Devils will see one confirmed signing in the winter, possibly a new striker.
United acquiring fresh talents has been the focus of Solskjaer lately following the exit of the club's chief scorers. The Daily Star reported that on this end, the Old Trafford is ready to spend at least £73 million on worthy hiring.
The fund, which came from the sale of Romel Lukaku, has been cleared by Ed Woodward, the club's executive vice-chairman, with the accompanying instructions on Solskjaer that there should be at least two new recruits to bolster the Reds' scoring capability in the coming year.
While no specific names have been confirmed, speculations are rife that the team will bring in at least one striker or scorer with proven creativity. One candidate that has been constantly mentioned is Moussa Dembele, who has been described as the perfect fit for Solskjaer's long-term plan for United.
It appeared though that the Lyon striker will not be going anywhere anytime soon as his club is reportedly not inclined to discuss transfer terms with any team.
Another target for the Reds is Croatian Mario Mandzukic, who supposedly has been wanting to get out of Juventus due to diminished time on the pitch. Mandzukic is a proven scorer, but the one thing that prevents him from heading to the Premier League is a high salary demand.
In recent weeks, there were reports the Juve player would be willing to agree to a pay cut, but it was unclear if United has made the arrangement for Mandzukic's transfer.
Now new reports are saying that Solskjaer is eyeing the return of an emerging winger to Old Trafford. That player was identified by Metro as Dwight McNeil, who five years ago left the Manchester United academy.
The 19-year-old has flourished since and at present is a key player for Burnley. United is said to be interested in bringing the teen back to the fold. Per the same report, McNeil didn't make the cut when he was 14, no thanks to below-par performance.
However, things have changed for the teen now that Burnley is demanding no less than £35 million for clubs wanting to take him in.
For his part, McNeil said signing up with United is a welcome proposition for him.
"I'm a Man United fan, despite what happened. I'll always be a Man United fan. I just wasn't up to their standards," the young winger was reported as saying.
