Meghan Markle marks her second Remembrance Sunday ceremony over the weekend. The Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry, and a couple of the royal family members, including Queen Elizabeth, took part in the event to honor those who fell in the line of duty.
While Prince Harry laid the wreath for the fallen, Meghan Markle stood beside Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, and Vice Admiral Timothy Laurence, who is Princess Anne's second husband. Queen Elizabeth, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, and Kate Middleton, on the other hand, were standing on a different balcony.
While it appeared that Meghan Markle was shunned by Queen Elizabeth for not letting her join her at her balcony, especially after the former actress and Prince Harry’s explosive interviews in the ITV documentary that was released last month, it wasn’t the case at all. As it turns out, this is not the first time the Duchess of Sussex didn’t join Her Majesty in the same balcony during the Remembrance Sunday ceremony.
Last year, Meghan Markle also didn’t stand with Queen Elizabeth, and there was no major controversy surrounding her and Prince Harry at the time yet. The truth is that the Duchess of Sussex is just following royal protocol, and her distance from Her Majesty had nothing to do with her or the Duke of Sussex at all.
“As the balconies of each window are small, it’s nearly impossible to fit more than three or four women on each – and although Meghan didn’t join her family members, she was given a very important position of her own,” People’s reporters Maria Pasquini and Simon Perry explained last year.
The reporters added that the royal family usually arrange themselves according to a royal “pecking order.” “For instance, when Meghan made her official Trooping the Colour debut in June, she wasn’t front and center on the palace balcony, and instead stood behind Kate and since William,” they said.
Meanwhile, the Remembrance Sunday ceremony was one of the few appearances of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle before heading for a six-week break. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are taking time off from their royal obligations, which many believe is their attempt to steer clear from all the criticisms that they have been dealing with for quite a while now.
Ever since Meghan Markle joined the royal family, she had been bombarded with negative comments. The situation became too much for the royal couple that they decided to sue a couple of publications to teach them a lesson. Unfortunately, their gesture received some backlash as it was seen as not royal-like.
