All celebrities that have visited or get invited to the Buckingham Palace have stories to tell. But, there are some who have oddly hilarious moments at the Queen's residence because of their encounter with Prince Philip.
English comedian/author David Walliams shared his experience visiting the royal palace and why it was an unforgettable one. During his guest appearance at The Jonathan Ross Show to promote his new book, The Beast of Buckingham Palace, Walliams was asked whether he had been to the palace and when was the last time he visited.
He recalled that he had last been to Buckingham Palace to attend a Variety Club reception where he had a shocking encounter with Prince Philip. Walliams said he brought his mother as her companion to the event. The author also recalled that stand-up comedian Lenny Henry and Rod Stewart were also at the event.
Walliams said he was amazed when the Duke of Edinburgh recognized him and Henry. However, they were more shock when Queen Elizabeth II's husband asked them, "What are you two doing here?"
Walliams said he explained to the Prince that they were there as representatives of Comic Relief, the British charity organization that raises money to help people in need in Africa. To their surprise, Prince Philip responded that the charity conducts event only once a year. The conversation turned bizarre when Duke said something to Henry.
"You're not even on television anymore, apart from those Premier Inn adverts," Prince Philip told Henry. Prince William and Prince Harry's grandfather is referring to Henry's ad for the budget hotel chain and the crime drama Broadchurch on ITV, which Henry appeared in 2017. The series ran from 2013 to 2017.
"Yeah, who knew he watches ITV?" Walliams said that made the show's audience and host laugh.
It proved that Prince Philip has been watching TV series and have been paying attention to TV ads. The Duke of Edinburgh is rarely seen in public occasions nowadays.
He was last seen at the wedding of Lady Gabriella Windsor in May. He was spotted laughing with Prince Harry. Philip spent his summer with the Queen at Balmoral before he moved to Sandringham in early September.
Meanwhile, David Walliams released his new book, The Beast of Buckingham Palace, last week. The fantasy book is about a young prince who never knows a life outside Buckingham Palace. However, when strange things breach the palace walls, he has to muster his courage to save his mother, the Queen, as well as the entire city.
