With Windows 10 1909 already deployed and problems appear to be non-existent, Microsoft is now on the next version of its flagship operating system. That would be the release that is codenamed 20H1, which the software giant is now calling Windows 10 2004.

When the update starts seeding, the 2004 label will stick as the official name for the OS version, and the choice was made to differentiate from the Windows Server 2003. Recall that in the past releases, '03' has been used for spring deployments, which is the case for 20H1, but in order to avoid confusion, it was decided that Windows 10 2004 would be the practical choice.

So it would seem that the OS past versions of 1803 and 1903 will not be followed by 2003. Microsoft said it will be 2004 moving forward, per the report by ZDNet.

As the 2020 spring release is nearing completion and the final has been officially dubbed as Windows 10 2004, Microsoft is now turning its attention to the fall rollout that is known for now as Version 20H2. If the 1909 release is to be the basis, this update will get unleashed around November next year.

Prior to that, there will be test builds that will be issued to the development channels, and these previews will get the nickname Manganese. For Windows Insiders in the Fast Ring, these builds will be the default releases.

If testers would want to stick with the 20H1/2004 test builds, then they will need to reconfigure their Insider settings. The trick is to switch from Fast to Slow Ring, and doing so will spare them from the bugs that likely are greater in numbers for the 20H2 version.

"As is normal with pre-release builds, these builds may contain bugs and be less stable. Now is the time to check your Windows Insider Settings and switch to the Slow ring before if you wish to remain on 20H1," Microsoft said, per the report by WCCFTech.

The Windows maker added that when the switch has been made, Insiders who jumped to Slow Ring will remain until Version 2004 has been finalized and hit the mainstream channel. It should be noted that this only applies to users who opted to flip from Fast to Slow Ring.

Windows 10 20H2 is anticipated as it will be the first version of the OS that is expected to boast of optimal support for dual-screen devices. Microsoft has already indicated that in-house hardware of the kind will make a commercial debut in time for the holiday season in 2020.

That is an outright tease from the company that there will be Surface devices with the promised features hitting the store shelves next year, of course, powered by Windows 10 20H2.
