It is just a few months away since we have seen the iPhone 11 series, but leaks and speculations about the next flagship iPhone are already making rounds online. The latest comes from ET News, which reveals the details about the screens of the upcoming iPhones speculated to arrive in 2020. According to the report, Samsung is the sole supplier of the Y-Octa technology that will be used on two of the three iPhone 12 models.
According to the news outlet, all iPhone 12 models will feature OLED screens. However, the two higher-end models will have more advanced display technology courtesy of Apple's supplier, Samsung. This new technology from the Seoul-based tech and electronics giant will reportedly give two iPhone 12 models much thinner display.
The Samsung Y-Octa technology will eliminate a separate touch-sensitive layer present in the iPhone 11 series. Because of this, the display is much thinner. Additionally, this technology enables the touchscreen circuitry directly patterned on the OLED panel that functions even without a separate layer.
The recent news underlines the fact that Samsung is Apple's sole supplier of the displays for higher-priced iPhone 12 models. 9To5mac reports that Samsung has to offer an excellent deal to the Cupertino tech juggernaut to be able to retain its position in the supply chain. Several reports claim that displays for the lower-priced iPhone 12 model will be split between Samsung and another Korean supplier LG.
LG is also equipped for this kind of production, but at present, it could not match the kind of quality and production that Samsung can offer. If the recent report is accurate, iPhone 12 displays will be solely provided by Korean suppliers. The Cupertino tech giant has been working hard to diversify its supply, but since some suppliers could not meet what the company wants, this goal is, at times, hard to achieve, especially now with the incident with Japan Display.
2020 is anticipated to be a big year for Apple, particularly in its iPhone portfolio. Rumors have it that the Cupertino-based tech titan will also release the compact and much cheaper iPhone SE 2 aside from the anticipated release of the iPhone 12 series. The upcoming iPhones are also rumored to house 5G support and will have up to 6 GB of RAM.
Popular Apple tipster ad TFI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo earlier predicted that Apple would release three iPhone 12 models. These variants will come with a 5.4-inch display, a 6.1-inch display, and a 6.7-inch display.
