Prince Charles is the rightful heir to the throne and will be taking over as the King of England once Queen Elizabeth retires. While it seems that Her Majesty still has enough gas to lead the monarchy, a royal expert claims that she could soon abdicate as Queen.

Richard Betherlson claims that Prince Charles had been "fundamentally running the Royal Family" for years, so it would be an easy decision for Queen Elizabeth to allow her son to take full control of the monarchy. The royal expert then pointed out that Prince Philip’s retirement was already a sign that Her Majesty will not be staying in the throne much longer.

"I myself felt that, after the Duke of Edinburgh retired at 95, it set the way and was a bit of a trial balloon for the Queen to follow suit in a few years,” he said. “She’s about two years away from that now, the Duke of Edinburgh is 98.”

It's a given fact that Queen Elizabeth wants nothing but the best for the monarchy. She still attends most of her duties despite her age.

Since she’s not getting any younger, there are a lot of things that she couldn’t physically do anymore. It was previously reported that Her Majesty already segregated some of her duties to the younger royals.

With that said, is Queen Elizabeth abdicating soon? Richard Betherlson believes so. "I think the Queen would if she felt she couldn’t perform the duties to the full extent she would like to do, she would probably feel it would be appropriate for her to either make way for a regency or to out and out abdicate,” he noted.

The royal expert then added that the ongoing scandal surrounding Prince Andrew might have decided Queen Elizabeth to abdicate easier. Richard Betherlson also said Prince Charles has been running the royal family for years.

"The incident with Prince Andrew – I think we may be closer to that. The situation has exposed the reality many of us have been saying for some time, since the Diamond Jubilee ended in 2012, that the Prince of Wales is fundamentally running the family now,” he said. “He is fundamentally making all the major decisions; he has been delegated a lot of the travel, most of the ceremonial duties of the monarchy the Queen can delegate."
