The term iPhone SE 2 serves as an ideal model name in describing the next low-cost successor Apple is planning to release in Mar. 2020 with the base price of around $399. But, it appears that the name iPhone SE 2 is not yet official. A new report claims that the successor to the iPhone SE is not the SE 2, but the iPhone 9 and the reasons behind the name seem to make a lot of sense too.

iPhone 9 could be the official name of the low-cost iPhone that Apple is planning to release in the first quarter of 2020, according to the Japanese blog Mac Otakara. The name iPhone 9 makes a lot of sense now if you think about it. The iPhone SE features a 4-inch screen while the upcoming low-cost smartphone rumored to be called iPhone SE 2 has a 4.7-inch display, similar to the panel of iPhone 8. In terms of design and display size, the iPhone 9 makes more sense than the iPhone SE 2 name.

In 2016, the iPhone SE house A9 Soc, while the iPhone 8 houses A11 Bionic chip. The iPhone 9 is reportedly housing an A13 Bionic chip, the same silicon chip that currently powers iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max. In terms of performance, the gap between the A11 and A13 is narrower compared to the gap between A9 and A13. This cements the concept that the next low-cost iPhone will be called iPhone 9 and not iPhone SE 2.

So, for the sake of argument, let's call the successor of iPhone SE as iPhone 9. So far, we know that the upcoming low-cost smartphone will feature 3 GB of LPDDR4X RAM. It is also rumored to have an internal base storage of 64 GB that can be expanded to 128 GB. It is worth noting, however, that these are all speculations and did not officially come from Apple.

Most of the specs that we know so far are predictions given by reliable Apple tipster and TFI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo or reported by various tech and business sites like Bloomberg. Apple has yet to confirm any of these details related to the successor of the iPhone SE. In this case, we suggest taking this information with a spoonful of salt.

2020 is going to be a big year for Apple if the reports pan out. Next year, the Cupertino giant is anticipated to launch the new iPhone series with 5G support. Earlier reports claim that it will release five models of low-cost iPhones.
