The expectations were high when Christian Pulisic made the move from Borussia Dortmund to Chelsea, and the United States international has been doing fairly well in the Premier League. However, the Blues boss Frank Lampard seemed to believe he has yet to see the best that the winger can give.
Pulisic debuted for Chelsea in August, and it was a losing effort against Manchester United. He would wait two more months to start registering goals, and the most memorable of which was the hat-trick achieved versus Burnley.
In total, ESPN reported that Pulisic has scored six goals and figured in five assists, all accomplished in 20 games for Chelsea so far. It looked like the American was en route to making giant waves in European football and even was named "Male Athlete of the Year" by the U.S. Soccer.
Then all went quiet after the rousing win at Turf Moor. Suddenly, it appeared that Pulisic was grappling to find his mark in English football.
The dry spell came as the Blues have to deal with a busy league schedule in the remaining days of December. Goal said in a report, Chelsea will need to play five games in the month coming from three losses and it appeared that Pulisic could not be depended on.
Going by the last four matches of Chelsea, Pulisic was not at his top form. He was struggling, and he failed to make a net in all those games despite getting promoted to the starting XI.
Moving forward, Lampard said Pulisic must pick up on his game on the pitch and start scoring anew. The manager stressed he expects more goals from the American attacker.
"He has played a lot of games recently, back to back, in a new league that we know is very physical for him. I am asking a lot but he has done very well. I expect a lot more," Metro reported the Blues head coach as saying.
Lampard made clear that he was "very pleased," so far with Pulisic's performance, but at the same time, he's asking for the young winger to give his best when out on the pitch.
"I think he gets himself in so many good positions with his talent and his dribbling ability that I think more goals will be the next stage of that. I am really pleased with him. I have asked a lot of him," Lampard said.
Chelsea is at fourth spot in the Premier League table right now and Lampard it still anything goes for the Top 4 finisher although he conceded Liverpool will cling on to No. 1 down the line.
