The first season of Watchmen recently concluded on HBO and answered almost all the questions in the series. Now that the story has ended, many viewers were wondering whether it will be renewed or canceled. So, here's what we know so far about the status of Watchmen season 2.
Currently, HBO hasn't yet officially renewed Watchmen season 2. When it comes to the ratings, the first season is, reportedly, averaging almost 740,000 live viewers, which were already solid numbers for the network. Despite that, however, the series looks like done for now -- considering the season 1 finale.
In addition, executive producer Damon Lindelof conceived the series as a complete story similar to how the classic graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons delivered a finished tale. Lindelof also admitted that he wasn't thinking about Watchmen season 2 while doing the first season.
The executive producer added that he wasn't sure if he should do another season, and reminds fans and viewers he does not own the series. Hence, someone else can take the reins and will do a new version to make Watchmen season 2 possible.
And even if the series will be renewed, fans should not expect it to come back immediately. It can be noted that Lindelof began working on the series back in September 2017; taking his time to properly conceived the story, as well as the world of Watchmen 34 years after the graphic novel.
Lindelof took two years to bring the show to HBO. So, if ever there'll be a second season, fans need to wait for a while. Another question is what would be the story of Watchmen season 2, as the events in the season 1 finale answered almost all the questions during the early run of the series.
Still, fans were rooting for Angela Abar/Sister Night, Looking Glass, Laurie Blake, and Adrian Veidt, and everyone wants to know what will happen to them now. If ever Lindelof comes up with a new idea, he could possibly tell a new story to some of these characters.
As for who's coming back, season 1's cast returns totally depend on the story of Watchmen season 2. If it will tell a new story, then the cast members will probably be new as well. But if Lindelof continues the story from the first installment, then fans will see Regina King, Jeremy Irons, Jean Smart, Tim Blake Nelson, and many others coming back in the second season.
