When people think of Barack Obama and Michelle Obama together, they think about a perfect couple. If a perfect relationship doesn’t exist, many believe that theirs is the closest one to being perfect.

Barack Obama and Michelle Obama have been married for 17 years but they, of course, had their own love life before meeting each other. In fact, the former President of the United States had a serious girlfriend before he met the ex-FLOTUS.

In his memoir “Dreams From My Father,” Barack Obama recalled telling his sister about Genevieve Cook. The ex-POTUS met her in 1983 in New York and they started dating. Davis Maraniss, an author of the book “Barack Obama: The Story,” said that this was Barack’s deepest relationship at the time.

But it seems that Barack Obama was still not ready to have a serious relationship and admitted that he was immature and tried to push Genevieve Cook away. As a matter of fact, when his ex-girlfriend told him that she loves him, he replied “thank you” instead of “I love you too.”

With their relationship going sour, Barack Obama and Cook ended up in Splitsville in 1984. Shortly after, the ex-POTUS met Michelle in Chicago. The pair instantly clicked and Michelle introduced Barack to her family just after a few dates.

However, Michelle Obama’s brother Craig Robinsons anticipated that their relationship will not last long. “He was very, very low-key. I loved the way he talked about his family because it was the way we talked about our family. I was thinking: 'Nice guy. Too bad he won't last,” he told Chicago Sun-Times. Clearly, he was wrong.

Meanwhile, Barack Obama and Michelle Obama may seem to have a picture-perfect relationship, but the ex-FLOTUS is the first one to admit that their marriage is not all rainbows and butterflies. She even shared that they went to couple’s therapy to fix whatever problems that they were dealing with.

Barack Obama and Michelle Obama’s marriage is a perfect example of turning flaws into something positive. They face their problems head-on, instead of making it linger around until it became a huge issue.

It’s also very refreshing to see someone who everyone admires so much to admit that they were immature. The important thing is that Barack Obama learned from his immaturity and became the best version of himself today.
