Amid the raging wildfires in Australia that ravaged New South Wales and neighboring states, EXO Chanyeol's fans have adopted a koala to raise awareness about the plight of wildlife affected by the fire.
According to a report by All Kpop, Chanyeol's fans from North America called CHANYEOLxNA, posted a certificate of adoption for a koala named Ocean Summer. The animal was adopted under Chanyeol's name.
"Meet our NEW member: Ocean Summer! Ocean is a Koala we adopted in #CHANYEOL's name from the Koala Hospital in Port Macquarie, Australia. Since Sept, several wildfires have destroyed millions of acres, destroying houses and wildlife," the group posted on Twitter.
Chanyeol's fans also shared more information about the situation in Australia in the hopes that other fandoms will also do their part in saving the animals who were displaced by the devastating bushfire.
A recent report by the Independent cited estimates that close to half a billion animals have perished in the wildfire, including koalas.
Ecologists from the University of Sydney revealed that, among the 480 million creatures that were killed, some 8,000 koalas were included, which was roughly 30 percent of the koala colony in New South Wales.
In his address to the parliament, Nature Conservation Council ecologist Mark Graham lamented that koalas were among the biggest casualties in the wildfire because they have no capacity to get away from the flames.
"The fires have burnt so hot and so fast that there has been significant mortality of animals in the trees, but there is such a big area now that is still on fire and still burning that we will probably never find the bodies," he said.
Another report by CNN revealed that in NSW alone, 3.6 million hectares have been burned by the wildfire. Across six states, 5.9 million hectares have been burned including areas for 1,300 homes that have been destroyed and 440 damaged by the blaze
Among the celebrities who have pledged their support efforts to stop the ongoing wildfire were P!nk, Australian actor Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman and country singer Keith Urban, Variety reported.
P!nk was the first to post her pledge of $500,000 for the local fire departments hard at work to contain the fires while power couple Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban also added $500,000 to the cause.
Meanwhile, other stars also posted links to organizations who are in need of support in the wake of Australia's wildfire such as Hugh Jackman, Jonathan Van Ness, Sharon Stone, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen Degeneres,
Even Queen Elizabeth II sent her heart out to the devastation brought on by Australia's wildfire and rallied the courageous and tireless emergency service workers who are continuing to work on stopping the fire.
