Last year, ahead of the annual BlizzCon, several sites reported the existence of "Overwatch 2." Later at the BlizzCon 2019, Blizzard announced the sequel to the popular RPG title, but it did not reveal details about its release window. A recent tweet from PlayStation (that was later deleted) may have revealed the release window of the game.
It appears that someone at the social media team of PlayStation Brazil got too excited this week and hit the tweet button before thinking announcing that "Overwatch 2" will arrive on PlayStation 4 and PC this year. Blizzard, the gaming studio behind the popular game, has yet to make an announcement about the release window and platform of the game. The gaming studio has not yet commented on the tweet, which was later deleted.
But, this is the Internet, and before PlayStation Brazil deleted the tweet, Voxel also screen captured the post. The tweet states," 2020 will be the year "Overwatch 2" comes to PS4." It also offered a link to an old PlayStation Blog interview from Nov. 2019 with the "Overwatch" Assistant Director Aaron Keller.
At last year's BlizzCon, "Overwatch 2" was playable, but game director Jeff Kaplan shared during that time that the game is still in its early development stage. Kaplan also said that Blizzard has no release window or date in mind yet. Based on Kaplan's earlier statements, it appears that Blizzard would like to take as much time as it can for the upcoming sequel.
While we could not verify the integrity of the deleted PlayStation Brazil tweet, it is likely that it was a simple error on the part of its social media team. Perhaps, someone who made the tweet thought "Overwatch 2" will launch sometime this year for PlayStation 4 and PC players ahead of the official launch of the PlayStation 5. The deleted tweet is in no way an indication of the official timeline of "Overwatch 2."
Blizzard, unlike other game developers, sometimes takes several years in between the announcement and release of the title. "Overwatch 2" could take a while, but we are hoping that Blizzard could release the game as early as this year. In one of his previous interviews, "Overwatch 2" game director Jeff Kaplan said that he is expecting that he will answer the same "Overwatch 2" question at BlizzCon 2020, hinting that if ever the game release this year, it could go beyond the Blizzard annual event.
The latest scoop on the release window of "Overwatch 2" is not official, and we suggest taking this with a pinch of salt.
