In 2018, Chinese tech titan Huawei launched the Huawei FreeLace wireless headset along with the Huawei P30 and P30 Pro flagship smartphone series. In Sept. 2019, the Chinese company launched the Huawei Mate 30 and Mate P30 Pro and debuted the FreeBuds wireless earbuds to rival Apple AirPods Pro. A new report claims that Huawei trademarked the MatePod name with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), possibly new wireless earbuds that might debut along with Huawei P40 and P40 Pro.
The trademark application of the Chinese tech giant was filed in Jan. 6, 2020. It is the same name trademarked by the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) in the UK on the same date. The name Huawei MatePod was classified as headsets; earphones; speakers, computer hardware; tablet; smartphones; handheld digital electronic devices capable of providing access to the internet, and for sending, receiving, and failing telephone calls, electronic mail, and other digital data.
The moniker MatePod sounds the same as the Huawei MatePad, which is the company's Android tablet lineup. Rumors have it that Huawei might be thinking of replacing the FreeLace and FreeBuds names with MatePod since it sounds similar to AirPods. Considering that the Huawei P40 and P40 Pro are anticipated to release on Mar. 2020, it seems that the Huawei MatePod will also unveil at the same date.
At this point, we do not have details about the specs of the Huawei MatePod side from its name. It is also worth mentioning that this is just a speculation, and nowhere in the submitted trademark says that it is releasing alongside the Huawei P40 or that it is a pair of wireless earbuds. At this point, it is safe to take this information with a pinch of salt.
In other Huawei news, the Chinese company is reportedly planning to release three flagship smartphones under the Huawei P40 series. The company might release Huawei P40, Huawei P40 Pro, and Huawei P40 Lite. The company might also release a special edition under the same branding, which could be called Porsche Design Edition or Max variant.
A recent Huawei P40 render reveals that the upcoming flagship smartphone might feature a dual-edge curved display with a punch-hole located at the top left corner of the dual-front facing cameras. The display size could be 6.5-inch or 6.7-inch. The back panel of the device sports a rectangular camera module that might house five cameras along with the LED flash. While these specs appear interesting, it is too early to get too excited yet considering that these details are not official.
