OnePlus finally showcased the much-awaited OnePlus Concept One at the CES 2020 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Unfortunately, earlier reports that the device will feature a foldable form factor is proven not true. But, the device features a couple of interesting technologies that might become a standard of future smartphones.
The OnePlus Concept One introduces the electrochromic glass that turns glass opaque. The main use of electrochromic glass is to conceal the cameras in the device. While the concept might appear dull to some, it allows the smartphone to have a cleaner look. Using this technology will allow smartphone makers to come up with a much cleaner looking premium smartphones considering that the trend these days shows a camera bump that is a bit unsightly.
The OnePlus Concept One comes in interesting color choices, which might be inspired by its McLaren Edition. The switch that hides the rear camera layout or changes it from opaque to transparent is about 0.7 seconds. The amount of time is equal to the time the camera app opens in a smartphone device.
Another use of the electrochromic glass is for a variable neutral density or ND filter. Through this, the company was able to get eight stops of light from getting into the lens. This is very useful, particularly for things with longer exposures and enables a far wider aperture.
In theory, it means this feature could help enhance the overall image quality of the photos, especially in brightly lit environments. Considering that the OnePlus Concept One is just a concept of what the company thinks is the future of smartphones, consumers will not be able to see it mass-produced. But, the idea is impressive, and perhaps smartphone makers could learn a thing or two from this.
OnePlus would not commit to a timeline where these features will be on its smartphone, but it will not be long. Showing off this impressive feature at a big event like CES just to showcase something that does not end up in your own product line could give the company a bad look. For a smartphone that looks this good, and with features this impressive, it would be a shame.
OnePlus was able to get into the smartphone industry when it introduced its flagship killer smartphones. These smartphones feature advanced technologies and features usually found on premium smartphones but retail at unbelievably low prices. OnePlus fans are hoping that the Chinese smartphone maker will continue doing this in its future releases. Meanwhile, you can check out the video of the OnePlus Concept One below.
