Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced last week that they will be stepping down from their titles as senior royals. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex also plan to live part-time in Canada while remaining firmly tied to the royal family.
Canada’s largest newspaper, The Globe and Mail, says that this is not a good idea at all. The publication stated that Canada is not a “halfway house” for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, while they “work out their own personal issues."
“The Canadian monarchy is virtual; it neither rules nor resides,” it read. “Our royals don’t live here. They reign from a distance. Close to our hearts, far from our hearths. And that is why, in response to the sudden announcement of a vague and evolving plan for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex – Prince Harry and Meghan – to move to Canada while remaining part of the Royal Family, the Trudeau government’s response should be simple and succinct: No.”
The Globe and Mail pointed out that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are always welcome to visit Canada as long as they retain their titles. But, to stay there? It’s a whole different story.
“You are welcome to visit, but so long as you are senior royals, Canada cannot allow you to come to stay,” it stated. “This isn’t about breaking up with the Crown. On the contrary, it’s about maintaining Canada’s unique and highly successful monarchy.”
One more argument about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s plan to live part-time in Canada is who would pay their bills. Some pointed out that, since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle decided to part ways with the royal family, so they should face the consequences and pay for their own security.
However, Emily Thornberry said that British taxpayers should still pay for the royal couple’s security because of the prince's service to the British Army.
"I think the British taxpayer should pay for the security of Harry and Meghan and their family as they do for former ministers," the politician said. "He has done great service. I just hate to think what he must be thinking now, having used his instinct to try and defend our country, now he has his much-loved wife and his baby under the type of media scrutiny they are suffering. He must be really wanting to defend them."
Emily Thornberry’s comment didn’t sit well with a lot of viewers. Many of them took to Twitter to share their frustrations with the British politician’s statement.
