In 2019, we saw several smartphone companies releasing new handsets with 5G support. It appears that beyond the amazingly fast network connectivity speed, 5G has a lot to offer, particularly in the smartphone industry. According to a new report, the mass release of 5G smartphones would help create an increase in smartphone sales.

The worldwide device industry, which includes notebook computers, desktop computers, and smartphones will grow by 0.9 percent this year, says Gartner. Shipments of all devices would also see a substantial increase from 2.15 billion units last year to 2.16 billion units this year, the report adds. The global growth would be triggered by bumped smartphone sales, particularly devices with 5G support.

It could be due to the consumers' fondness to get their hands on the latest communication technology available in the market. The increased availability of 5G smartphones will increase the number of mobile phone replacements. It would lead to worldwide device shipments to return to growth this year, according to Ranjit Atwal, the senior research director of Gartner.

Gartner also reports that there would be 1.7 percent growth in the smartphone market. This year, the arrival of 5G handsets would help enhance the sales, especially in China and other emerging markets in Asia and the Pacific reveals the report. Apple is anticipated to unveil four new models in 2020 under the iPhone 12 series.

According to earlier reports, all iPhone 12 models would house the Qualcomm Snapdragon X55 5G modem. Shipments of iPhone 12 models could greatly contribute to the overall smartphone growth. Apple reportedly is launching a couple of not so premium models, which could help obtain emerging markets for the Cupertino company.

With strategic pricing and 5G support to some of the iPhone 12 models, Apple could make the upcoming flagship smartphone series more attractive to consumers. Apple is not the only company; however, that would introduce flagship smartphones with 5G support this year. Android brands like Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, and Oppo are all preparing their respective smartphones with 5G support.

Xiaomi boss, in fact, said late last year that the company would release 5G smartphones in all price points. Apple should be careful in pricing its iPhones, considering that other rivals are planning to launch entry-level 5G smartphones, mid-range 5G smartphones, and premium 5G smartphones. Also, the arrival of 5G smartphones is expected to improve the 5G network coverage in countries that are already using wireless network connectivity like the US.
