Taylor Swift once struggled with her food intake. The pop superstar opened up for the first time in her Netflix documentary, Taylor Swift: Miss Americana, that she lived with an eating disorder once in her life.
The "Lover" singer revealed that she had a complicated relationship with food in the past years. In the documentary that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, Taylor talked about the spiteful comments about her that played in the press over the years. Apparently, these seriously affected Taylor's relationship with food which led to an eating disorder.
Taylor said she applied the same psychology of reward and punishment to everything else in her life including on her own body. Hence, when she appeared on the cover of a magazine for the very first time when she was 18 and the headlines indicated 'Pregnant at 18?', Taylor was devastated.
"[And] the headline was like 'Pregnant at 18?' And it was because I had worn something that made my lower stomach look not flat. So I just registered that as a punishment," said Taylor.
Taylor said in an interview with Variety that she was not comfortable looking at her pictures at the time. Whenever she feels like her tummy was too big or she looked like pregnant, it triggers her to starve herself.
Miss Americana also showed some photos of the singers that illustrate how thin Swift was during the 1989 era in 2014 as compared to a much healthier look she had during the Reputation tour in 2018. The "Shake It Off" singer admitted that she under-eating during 1989 album promotions which severely affected her stamina on tour.
Taylor said there were times at her tour that she thought she will pass out on stage. She added that during her size double-zero era, she always had a ready answer whenever someone told her that she looks frail.
"'What are you talking about? Of course, I eat. .... I exercise a lot.' And I did exercise a lot. But I wasn't eating," the 30-year-old singer revealed.
The "You Need To Calm Down" songstress admitted that she is not comfortable talking about her eating disorder until today. However, she decided to include it in Miss Americana because it is connected to what she has done and what she is doing now and not doing in her life.
Swift added that now she learned to stop caring about the negatives remarks about her weight. Selena Gomez's BFF said she found inspiration and support from women like actress Jameela Jamil, who is a strong advocate of inclusivity and acceptance and a critic of diet products.
