Despite all the adversity, Arsenal FC is primed for a breakout. The Gunners have experienced some sort of drought as far as goals are concerned, although there are more distractions to consider. That includes addressing the commitment of the players.
At the top of it all is the case of forward Pierre-Emerick Auabmeyang. Rumors flew that the 30-year-old would exit Arsenal for Barcelona. The Spanish champions were skimming the market for a forward following the injury to Luis Suarez. And seeing how his contract would expire in 18 months, together with stalled talks on a new contract, the move somehow made sense.
Unfortunately, the thought of seeing the Gabon international jumping ship never crossed the mind of Bernd Leno. He says he never had that feeling that their captain would leave them behind.
“Of course there are many rumors and other people talk about this,” said the German keeper. “But you never had the feeling that any player was thinking about another club or wanted to leave, was refusing to train or they didn’t have the mentality in the training," said Leno in a report by Goal.com.
Further, it was Auabmeyang himself who shot down all the blabber. He says he is 100-percent committed to Arsenal and that all rumors of his future were untrue. This would be backed by head coach Mikel Arteta, saying that French football player was not going anywhere.
With that somehow settled, the immediate thing that the Gunners need to address is their ability to get goals. Aubameyang returned after a three-game ban last weekend but was unable to add to his 14 league goals this season. Arsenal settled for a 0-0 craw with Turf Moor, NBC Sports reported.
The result of their last match sent the Gunners sitting at 10th in the Premier League table. They are 10 points off the top four and seven points above the relegation zone. However, whatever they lack on offense has been made up in the defensive end. Arteta has tightened things up defensively. As for goals, Leno believes they will eventually come. He believes they are on the right course, and things will soon fall to place.
“Of course we need to score more goals because defensively we are doing very good and offensively I think we can score more. But we are on the right way,” said Leno.
The timing of the Premier League's winter break may have come at the right time for the Gunners. It allows Arteta to work with his squad. They will undergo training camp in Dubai to regroup and address needed adjustments moving forward.
