Queen Elizabeth officially returned from her annual winter break. Her Majesty didn’t waste any time and resumed her royal obligations right away.
However, Queen Elizabeth was not seen out and about on Feb. 6 as she spent a very important day with Prince Philip. The quick break was to commemorate the day that changed the Queen’s life forever.
On February 6, 1952, Princess Elizabeth’s father, King George VI, died in his sleep at the age of 56. Although the King had already been suffering from lunch cancer and other health issues, his sudden passing was a shock to all.
In fact, there were no signs that King George VI was on his last days on earth as the then Princess Elizabeth was even completing her royal duty at the time and was on a royal tour to Kenya with Prince Philip. Her husband was the first one who learned about the unfortunate news and took her aside to tell her what happened.
Princess Elizabeth immediately flew back to England to mourn the death of her father and be with the rest of the royal family. The 25-year-old Princess then revealed that she will be assuming King George’s obligations.
“By the sudden death of my dear father I am called to assume the duties and responsibilities of sovereignty,” she said at the time. “My heart is too full for me to say more to you today than I shall always work, as my father did throughout his reign, to advance the happiness and prosperity of my peoples.”
Every February 6, Queen Elizabeth makes sure to spend the death anniversary of her father at Sandringham with Prince Philip. She will be returning to Buckingham Palace after taking the time to commemorate that significant day.
Meanwhile, Queen Elizabeth made her first official visit of 2020 to a Royal Air Force (RAF) base in Marham, Norfolk on Monday. The Queen’s visit to the RAF base appears to have an important meaning after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle step back from royal life. Aside from losing their HRH titles, the Duke of Sussex will also lose his military titles.
Prince Harry served in the military for 10 years and inherited the Captain-General of the Royal Marines title from Prince Philip after his retirement in 2017. With his withdrawal, Queen Elizabeth may have visited the RAF base to reinforce the royal family’s dedication to the forces.
