As the heir to the throne, Prince Charles is set to take his mother's, Queen Elizabeth II, position as the new king. This will give his wife, Camilla Parker-Bowles, a new title, too. When the Prince of Wales becomes the new monarch, he is expected to take King Charles III's name or whatever he chooses to. But, what name does he want?
Prince Charles is now 71 years old and dubbed to be the "oldest king-in-waiting in British royal history." So when the time comes that he has to take the throne, he will surely accept it.
When he finally takes his mantle, according to Express, there are beliefs that he will take the name of King Charles III. In the royal naming protocols, Prince Charles will be the latest king that has a name of Charles since the 17th century's Charles II of England.
However, when choosing the monarch's name, royals today now have more freedom to choose what they want. The University College London's Constitution Unit at the School of Public Policy noted that the "official title is subject to change."
The new king or queen can choose the name that they want when they seat on the throne. For Charles, he can take his father's name, Prince Philip.
In the Constitution Unit, it said that Prince Charles doesn't need to adopt Charles III's title. "He is free to choose his own regnal title," it said. As his Christian names are Charles Philip Arthur George, he can use King George VII, King Philip, or King Arthur instead of King Charles.
Meanwhile, when Prince Charles becomes the king, his wife, Camilla, also has to change her title. Royal commentator Angela Mollard revealed that the Duchess of Cornwall could be like Prince Philip and Kate Middleton.
On the Royals podcast, Mollard claimed that Camilla could play a key role in Prince Charles' reign, just like what Prince Philip has been for Queen Elizabeth. She explained that she would be the queen consort, just like Kate Middleton, as they wouldn't be called the queen.
Mollard also praised Camilla for doing an extraordinary job with the way she combines her wit with the job she has as a representative of the royal family. She manages to embrace her life as a senior royal, and she clearly loves her husband, Prince Charles. With everything she has put in their relationship, she will remain his partner and his consort when the time comes.
