Prince Charles is the rightful heir to the throne and will be taking over as the King of England once Queen Elizabeth retires. While it seems that Her Majesty still has enough gas to lead the monarchy, a new report claims that she could soon abdicate as Queen.
The year 2020 may have just begun but Queen Elizabeth is already enduring a lot of difficulties due to her son Prince Andrew’s resignation, and grandson Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s decision to step down as senior royals. Now, a major hint was dropped that Her Majesty may stand down this year.
Bookmaker Coral has slashed odds on Queen Elizabeth abdicating to 5-4 from 2-1. And Prince Charles becoming King is at 1-5. But there is another option, which is the Prince of Wales paving the way to his son Prince William at 3-1.
"The Queen has already delegated a lot of her responsibilities to Prince Charles but many punters feel 2020 will be the year that Her Majesty abdicates from the throne,” Coral’s John Hill said. “Although Prince Charles is next in line to take over, we have seen some bets on Prince William leapfrogging his father to become next monarch.”
Royal expert Richard Betherlson previously claimed that Prince Charles had been "fundamentally running the Royal Family" for years, so it would be an easy decision for Queen Elizabeth to allow her son to take full control of the monarchy. The royal expert then pointed out that Prince Philip’s retirement was already a sign that Her Majesty will not be staying in the throne much longer.
Since she’s not getting any younger, there are a lot of things that the Queen couldn’t physically do anymore. It was previously reported that Her Majesty already segregated some of her duties to the younger royals. So is Queen Elizabeth abdicating soon? Richard Betherlson believes so.
"I think the Queen would if she felt she couldn’t perform the duties to the full extent she would like to do, she would probably feel it would be appropriate for her to either make way for a regency or to out and out abdicate,” the royal expert noted, adding that Prince Charles has been running the royal family for years.
Richard Betherlson then added that the ongoing scandal surrounding Prince Andrew might have led Queen Elizabeth to decide to abdicate easier. And now, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle even added to the Queen’s worries after their shocking announcement last month.
