Samsung is the first company to introduce a foldable and flip foldable smartphone. Huawei last year launched the Huawei Mate X, but it was met with several delays before it was made available to select regions. Now, the Chinese tech giant officially debuts the Huawei Mate Xs, a more polished version of the robust-looking version we earlier saw.

Huawei Mate Xs Design And Display

The Huawei Mate Xs takes pride in its robust looking design with a quad-layer construction for the display. It comes with a couple of polyamide film layers that support the foldable OLED panel. It is also equipped with a softer polymer layer that serves as a cushion. Moreover, it has a final layer that links the main body of the foldable smartphone, the same design we earlier saw on Samsung Galaxy Z Flip.

While these improvements may sound minor, they address crucial issues that consumers and tech enthusiasts earlier raised on the early models on foldable smartphones.

The Huawei Mate Xs features an 8-inch diagonal unfolded display with 2480 x 2200 pixels. When the smartphone folds, it maintains a 6.6-inch display with 19.5: ratio. Meanwhile, the back features a 24:9 display that could serve as a viewfinder, especially for selfies.

Camera Configuration

The Huawei Mate Xs sports a 40 MP f/1.8 primary camera with 8 MP f/2.4 Telephoto lens equipped with OIS. It also comes with 16MO f/2.2 ultrawide sensor with a Time of Flight module for better-looking bokeh shots and better edge detection. While the foldable smartphone has no front camera for selfie, taking selfies could be done by folding the Huawei Mate Xs.

Internal Specs

Another factor that contributes to the robust design of the foldable smartphone is the Falcon Wing hinge. While hands-on evaluation plainly shows a more durable design, the device still shows the crease when the panel folds. As for its battery, the Huawei Mate Xs packs a 4,500 mAh battery. It runs on the flagship 5G SoC of Huawei, which is the Kirin 990 chipset.

It is also capable of 55W fast-charging and comes with a free charger when you purchase it. In addition, the Huawei Mate Xs houses EMUI 10, which is based on Android 10's open-source version. It has no Google apps or services (as expected); instead, the Chinese tech giant depends on its own ecosystem, which is the Huawei Mobile Services.

Other Details

The Huawei mate Xs is currently available in 8/512 GB configuration retailing at €2,499 or around $2,700. It will be available starting Mar. 2020 as confirmed by Huawei CEO Richard Yu.
