As of March 22, the European Region has 151,293 confirmed cases, plus 22,752 new cases reported in the past 24 hours (March 21 - March 22.) Total deaths are at 7,462 with new deaths at 1,426. 

The region has already eclipsed China's total number of cases and total deaths. The Asian country was the epicenter of the outbreak in December and has in fact subjected to numerous racist attacks. The tides are believed to have turned these days. China reported 81,498 total number of cases and 82 new ones in the past 24 hours. Deaths are at 3,267 with only six new deaths as of March 22.  

Israel reported its first death due to the virus. The patient was an 88-year-old elderly who according to reports was a survivor of the Holocaust. The elderly is one of the residents at a retirement home in Jerusalem who contracted infections after a social worker became positive. The latter attended a wedding and was infected by a French visitor. 

The World Health Organization includes Israel under its situation reports for the European region. To date, Israel has 883 confirmed cases and 171 new infections. 

In Italy, the worst-hit country in the region, officials have already banned all means of travels inside the country as it reported 795 new deaths as of Sunday night. Italy continues to report the highest number of fatalities around the globe. The nation now has 53,578 total cases plus 6,557 new ones. Total deaths are at 4,827. More alarming is that the country continues to see deaths among doctors and front liners, including priests. 

In Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel was placed under quarantine after a doctor who vaccinated her tested positive for COVID-19. The country has since banned gatherings of more than two people, and closed hair, beauty and massage studios. 

In Spain, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced plans to extend its state of emergency for another 15 days. The announcement was made after the country reported 394 deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing the total fatalities to 1,720. 

In France, lawmakers gave a green light to tougher penalties for those who will go against the nationwide confinement order. The country has lost a doctor for the first time according to reports on Sunday. The doctor died in one of the hospitals in Paris. France now has 674 deaths with 112 new fatalities within the past 24 hours. The total cases are at 16,018, with new cases of 1,821 as of Sunday night.  

Russia, meanwhile, is raising suspicions over its low number of COVID-19 cases. The country only reported 367 cases as of Sunday night with local health experts saying none of them is fatal. Russia said they have run more than 140,000 tests. Amid suspicions that the actual number of infections within the former Soviet Union remained undetected, Russian president Vladimir Putin maintained the situation in his country is well under control.
