Cam Newton is now officially available after the Carolina Panthers released him. As of this writing, no team has come forward to discuss a potential contract with the 2015 NFL MVP. Some are suggesting that a reunion with former coach Ron Rivera with the Washington Redskins is a possibility. Unfortunately, the 58-year-old coach does not see Newton fitting in with the plans of the Redskins.

Rivera points out how the Redskins are emphasizing on youth and Newton may not be a good fit for Washington. It appears that the former Panthers coach prefers to see his current team rise with new blood and as a team, the team official site reported.

“We have the chance to set and establish a thing so that’s the way we’re looking at it,” Rivera said.

Ironically, Rivera did take in former Panthers player Kyle Allen. But the key thing to note here is the age factor. Allen is only 24 while Newton is already 30 years old. But other than the age, critics feel that the 2015 NFL Offensive Player of the Year can stay healthy that concerns not only Washington but other NFL teams.

Since that great 2015 run where the Panthers faced the Denver Broncos at Super Bowl 50, Newton has had a history of being frequently injured. He has yet to get proper clearance on his current foot injury - something that is likely to make prospective teams think twice.

As for the Redskins, it will be interesting how Allen and Dwayne Haskins will respond under Rivera. There is no question that the 58-year-old mentor knows what it takes to make a great NFL run although immediate results should not be expected. One can only look at how the San Francisco 49ers rose last NFL season even if they were unable to win it all.

For Newton, all he can do right now is to see if some NFL team will reach out and give him a shot. The New England Patriots would have been an ideal landing spot but the Pats seem to be doing the same rebuilding efforts Washington is doing. They are focusing on youth right now although NFL trades are not discounted. But even if that were the recourse, the point there is the health and the age factor - two things that are working against Cam Newton. With the NFL on break, all the top pick of the 2011 NFL Draft can do is heal up and hope he can bounce back with the aid of a medical clearance before the coming season officially gets underway.
