Last week, there were reports that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle left Canada to start living in Los Angeles with their 10-month-old son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. As there has been a big issue about the royal couple's security costs and who will cover it while in the Great White North, the same thing is asked when they moved to the United States. Now, U.S. President Donald Trump finally spoke about the issue and seemed to start a drama with the Sussexes.
According to Celebrity Insider, the POTUS seemed to be bothered that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex chose to live in Los Angeles after they left their roles as senior members of the royal family in exchanged for a simpler life. However, instead of putting his attention to a much bigger problem in the U.S. that is the coronavirus outbreak, he seemed to worry more about the pair's move and the need for their security cost.
In a tweet, Donald Trump cleared that the American taxpayers would never pay for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's security. "I am a great friend and admirer of the Queen and the United Kingdom. It was reported that Harry and Meghan, who left the Kingdom, would reside permanently in Canada," he said. "Now they have left Canada for the U.S. However; the U.S. will not pay for their security protection. They must pay!"
The Sussexes dropped their bombshell announcement in January, deciding to step back as senior members of the royal family. The couple wanted to be financially independent and divide their time between the United Kingdom and North America. They will officially step down on March 31, along with the official removal of their HRH titles.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle started residing in Canada when they began their six-week break last year. The country used to cover the cost of their security, but authorities revealed they would stop paying for it once they officially become non-working royals.
Mary-Liz Power, a spokeswoman for Canada's public safety minister, said in February, by WCTI, that the country's assistance to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle would be cut in line with their status' change. Being a duke and a duchess, they are both considered "internationally protected persons" who needed "security measures under an international treaty," but things are about to be different.
There were unconfirmed reports that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle jetted to Los Angeles before the borders officially shut down due to the coronavirus outbreak. However, representatives for Meghan have yet to respond about the issue.
