The United States has overtaken both Italy and China in the number of confirmed coronavirus cases, and the death toll in the country is also spiking by the day, particularly in some of the hardest-hit states such as New York.

New York City Deaths Spike

In New York City, 98 people died as of Sunday morning, marking a grim milestone in the rising CoVID-19 Cases in the state of New York.

According to the New York Post, the new deaths were recorded in just a span of seven hours. 1,166 more patients were also confirmed to have contracted the fast-spreading virus, with Queens still being the hardest-hit area at 10,737 cases.

As of Sunday evening, the entire state of New York recorded 59,648 confirmed coronavirus cases and 965 deaths. New York City in particular has 33,474 infections.

California County Reports Over 2,000 CoVID-19 Cases

The Los Angeles County on Sunday reported a total of 2,100 confirmed coronavirus cases after 300 new cases were reported in a span of 24 hours, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The death toll in the said county has also reached 37 as five more people succumbed to the disease. Local officials further revealed that intensive care unit (ICU) beds were fast filling up as the country continues to implement widespread testing.

As of Sunday evening, California recorded a total of 5,797 confirmed coronavirus cases.

King County Remains Seattle's Hardest-Hit

King County still makes up the biggest chunk of coronavirus cases in Seattle, Washington with 2,161 cases as of Sunday evening.

The Seattle Times reported that some health science experts still haven't found the answer as to how the CoVID-19 strain spread across Washington since the first case was detected despite the local government working to contain the virus.

So far, Washington reported a total of 4,896 confirmed CoVID-19 cases and 195 deaths from the highly-infectious disease.

New Jersey Records Over 2,300 New Cases

New Jersey on Sunday reported 2,316 new coronavirus cases, bringing the state's total to at least 13,386. There have been 161 deaths in the second hardest-hit state in the U.S.

According to nj.com, Gov. Phil Murphy said in a radio interview Sunday morning that the country is watching how New Jersey will manage the virus now that it has become only second to New York in most CoVID-19 cases.

Despite the spike in new cases, local health officials said at least 22,216 have recovered in the state.

Massachusetts Records Nearly 700 New Cases

Being the fifth hardest-hit state in the U.S., Massachusetts recorded 698 new coronavirus cases on Sunday, bringing the state's CoVID-19 cases toll to 4,955, NBC affiliate WYCN-LD reported.

The state also recorded four new deaths from the disease. Middlesex County has the highest number of cases at 981, followed by Suffolk County with 940, and Norfolk County with 548.

Overall, the U.S. recorded at least 139,523 confirmed coronavirus cases as of Sunday, and at least 2,433 deaths.
