The Redmond-based tech giant Microsoft has yet to launch the Surface Duo commercially. However, a new report recently claimed that the company is already working on the sequel of the dual-screen device. The report added that that the Microsoft Surface Duo 2 could feature a third screen, something which could challenge the Samsung Galaxy Fold 2.

The latest information about the Microsoft Surface Duo 2 comes from the patent filed by the company itself. The document reveals that the rumored device would have an edge screen. It would also feature a third screen that would show content and information relative to the orientation of the device.

While it appears that the third screen might have limited usability, the document mentions that it could serve as a panel for message preview, battery levels, notifications, and even time. For example, the third screen could show new text messages or missed calls when the Microsoft Surface Duo 2 is closed. Other functionalities like access and control to apps along with multi-tasking could be found on the outer part of the screen when the device is on its "tent state."

In a report by Windows Latest, it reveals that the third screen is called the "Edge Screen" and is the area where the hinge is located. It is possible that the third display could be used as a means to bridge the screens. It could also make the Microsoft Surface Duo 2 a long continuous display when it is fully opened.

But, this design would require the Redmond-based tech titan to utilize smart engineering. It would take a different level of creativity to fit the third screen on top of a hinge smoothly. Aside from these, Microsoft must make sure that the Surface Duo 2 would house sufficient processing power to do this successfully.

The company would also require the correct software smarts to allow the screen to automatically adjust between serving as a notification bar and a missing screen to fill the space between the two other displays. As for its release window, it is hard to have any tentative date yet since the company has not yet commercially launched the Surface Duo.

In Oct. 2019, Microsoft unveiled the Surface Duo. The Redmond-based tech company has made several changes to the upcoming dual-screen device since its unveiling. The Microsoft Surface Duo is most likely Windows 10X's reference device. The Windows 10X is Microsoft's latest software designed for dual-screen laptops and other devices.
