One of the most-awaited flagship smartphones arriving this year is the iPhone 12 series from Apple. Over the past months, rumors and leaks provided consumers with the idea of what to expect from the upcoming premium smartphone. Interestingly, new information was leaked recently, confirming the highly awaited killer features of the higher tier iPhone 12 Pro.

iPhone 12 Pro Latest Leak

A recent post on the social networking site Twitter revealed that the iPhone 12 Pro would have a massive upgrade when it comes to it camera configuration at the back. Just like the 2020 iPad Pro, the leaked images display Apple's LiDAR Scanner at the back of the flagship smartphone. The image is a quad-camera setup that shares some resemblances with the back of the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max.

It appears that the fourth sensor in the rear camera configuration of the iPhone 12 Pro is a LiDAR sensor. For the uninitiated, the LiDAR sensor is designed to provide accurate depth measures and dramatically enhance the Augmented Reality available in various apps. Earlier claims from Fast Company and reputable TFI Securities Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo backed claims that the iPhone 12 Pro model would feature the time of flight depth sensor.

Even the code uncovered within the IOS 14 build supports this claim. Now, Concepts iPhone, the original source of the leaked photo, claims that the details were obtained from Apple's iOS 14.

What is LiDAR Scanner?

The industry first heard about the LiDAR Scanner when Apple launched the 2020 iPad Pro. It is a sensor that offers the time of flight based depth mapping to the rear camera configuration on Apple's premium tablet. As mentioned above, the technology would enable the 2020 iPad Pro to be better in handling computer vision and augmented reality apps.

On this year's iPad Pro, the LiDAR scanner measures the objects surrounding the user for up to five meters away. It functions at nanosecond speeds at the photon level. The A12Z Bionic processor of the 2020 iPad Pro allows a more in-depth understanding of a scene. Moreover, it dramatically minimizes the setup time that augmented reality apps usually require.

The leaked information about the iPhone 12 Pro means that the LiDAR Scanner will work hand in hand with the Apple A14 Bionic chip. According to Apple, the technology "opens up more pro workflows and supporting pro photo and video apps." While this information is exciting, it is worth mentioning that it is not yet official. We suggest taking this with a good measure of salt.
