Princess Diana is not only adored by her royal fans but A-list celebrities, too. When the late Princess of Wales organized a surprise birthday party for Prince William, she invited a handful of supermodels, including Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell. Decades have passed, these two iconic catwalkers recalled the time they met the People's Princess and how happy but intimidated they were.
During Naomi Campbell's No Filter with Naomi live chat with Cindy Crawford on YouTube, the latter revealed she was "so intimidated" to meet Prince Charles' former wife and be at Kensington Palace. She commended how down-to-earth Princess Diana was, as there were too many protocols and couldn't understand some of it because she was not English.
"I loved Princess Diana, I just loved her," Naomi Campbell told Cindy Crawford, as noted by Hello! Magazine. "Humble, how down-to-earth, and I'm just blessed to know her for the time that I did."
Recalling their meeting, Cindy Crawford believed Princess Diana opened the door for her and made her feel so welcome. Despite being a royal, the 54-year-old actress felt like she was just going to a friend's house.
At the time, Princess Diana was wearing jeans and a cashmere sweater, looking "super laid back." Although the Fair Game star felt a little uncomfortable, it was a delightful experience for her and a great memory to have.
Meanwhile, Naomi Campbell also shared her experience meeting Princess Diana. At the time, she was helping her organize a supermodel surprise birthday party for Prince William. She went with fellow '90s supermodel, like Claudia Schiffer and Christy Turlington, and the Duke of Cambridge was still at his school.
They all arrived at Kensington Palace before Prince William did, so Princess Diana was like, "okay," and they asked what they needed to do. Naomi Campbell found that moment very sweet.
According to People, in the 2017 ITV and HBO documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, Kate Middleton's husband revealed that he "turned bright red" when his mom set up a birthday surprise with the famous supermodels. He was surprised to see Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, and Naomi Campbell waiting for him at the top of the stairs.
At the time, he was only about 12 or 13 years old, and he had posters of them all on his wall. Prince William didn't know what to say, fumbled, and even fell down the stairs as he was "completely and utterly" awestruck seeing the three models waiting for him, thanks to Princess Diana.
