Experts say some of the important ways to protect yourself from the coronavirus or COVID-19 is by sanitizing your hands with alcohol and by washing it with soap and clean flowing water. If you want to add more extra protection inside your house, cleaning and sanitizing your place can also help big time.

Given these reasons, people can't help but purchase a lot of alcohol and other disinfectant solutions from grocery stores with hopes of protecting their homes well enough against the virus. Unfortunately, with limited stocks, other people aren't able to purchase these products anymore.

Are you one of those people who can't buy disinfectants anymore due to a lack of supplies from your local supermarket? No need to worry and make one for yourself instead.

WHAT IS CHLORINE?

Chlorine is an antiseptic commonly used in households to treat swimming pools and make water safe for drinking. In the industry, chlorine is an important element used to produce products such as papers, dyes, plastics, medicines, textiles, insecticides, paints, solvents, and antiseptics.

CHLORINE AS AN EFFECTIVE DISINFECTANT

Chlorine, may it be in powder, liquid or gas form, when combined to water will eventually create a solution called hypochlorous acid. This acid is very effective in killing pathogens such as viruses and bacteria such as E.coli, salmonella, and other viruses. It works by destroying its molecules' chemical bonds, as explained by Live Science.

HOW TO MAKE THE SOLUTION?

To make the chlorine solution you can use to sanitize your place, simply prepare two liters of clean water and one tablespoon of chlorine powder. Combined the two and wait until the powder has completely dissolved. Use the solution to clean your floor, the surfaces such as tables and kitchen tops, and even the things you and your family frequently touch such as doorknobs.

For the chlorine solution, you can use as hand disinfectant or sanitizer, on the other hand, you just have to prepare one tablespoon of chlorine powder and twenty liters of clean water. Combined and wait until completely dissolved. Transfer it in a clean container. Use it like how you use alcohol.

WHAT ARE THE THINGS TO REMEMBER WHEN MAKING THE SOLUTION?

Chlorine exposure due to the making of this solution could cause several health effects to happen such as wheezing, difficulty in breathing, irritation of airway, sore throat, chest tightness, cough, skin irritation, and eye irritation. To avoid all these, better to protect your eyes and skin by having them covered, ventilate your working area, and wash your hands with soap and water after, as advised by North Dakota State University.
