The current global health crisis sent most people all over the world home. With some needing to work from home, and others want to reach out to their loved ones, the use of videoconferencing and messaging platforms has become a staple. According to a new report, WhatsApp, a popular messaging app, could be easily hacked and accounts could be stolen as long as the attacker gets a hold of the account's number.

Easy WhatsApp Hack

A recent blog post from ESET security researcher Jake Moore gives WhatsApp users the idea of how easy it to attackers to steal their accounts. Unfortunately, the hacker would not need to unlock the phone of the user or break the user's password. With attackers gaining access to a WhatsApp account, they could obtain the archive of all the WhatsApp user's call logs and chats.

This attack could work against spouses, co-workers, roommates, classmates, and friends. Some could even use this to attack their boss, or some stranger they are having lunch or coffee with. The only thing that the target needs to do is to leave their phone for a few seconds.

How to Protect Yourself?

Usually, when it comes to security or privacy issues, the initial recommendation is to install a superior password manager or antivirus software. The problem with this security hole is that hackers do not need the WhatsApp user's password or involve any spyware or malware. However, there is still a way to solve this issue and protect your WhatsApp account.

To avoid this kind of attack, it is important that WhatsApp users must enable a PIN on their account. This PIN code is required when users port their accounts from one smartphone to another. Disabling text previews could also help mitigate this issue.

How To Set WhatsApp Two-Step Verification Process

WhatsApp users have to go to the settings of the app and tap Account. After that, look for Two-Step Verification. Users will receive a prompt message to enter a six-digit PIN. Users might be required to key in their email address to serve as the app's failsafe in the event that the user forgets the PIN.

The ESET security researcher also suggests to switch-off message previews for SMS on the lock screen of the device. While it is going to be inconvenient, it is another way to make sure the WhatsApp account would not be hacked. Also, the simplest way to avoid getting your account hacked is by making sure that you always carry it with you and avoid leaving it unattended.
