Kevin Durant played for OKC and the Warriors before joining the Brooklyn Nets and easily he can be considered as the best man to wear both uniforms. However, his former Thunder colleague Kendrick Perkins decided to pick up a fight before conceding that indeed KD is among the greatest in the NBA.
Before heading to the Bay Area, Durant teamed up with Perkins and Russell Westbrook in Oklahoma City and the experience seemed to convince the big man that Westbrook was the better man when compared to KD. It should be noted that both KD and Westbrook are MVP winners but failed in their quest to bring the NBA title to OKC.
According to NBC Sports, Perkins declared Westbrook as the best Thunder player in history, and unsurprisingly his observation did not sit well with KD. The latter fired back on Twitter, which resulted in regrettable exchanges.
First off, KD, his pride bruised by Perkins' online statement, accused his former teammate of mediocre performance in their last postseason with OKC. In his view, Durant said Perkins was in no position to judge who best performed with the Thunder when he produced negligible points during the campaign.
In retaliation, the big man said Durant made "the weakest move in NBA history," in 2016, referring to KD's surprise exit in the year for the chance to win NBA rings with Golden State. The weak move, however, won for KD two NBA titles and the same number of NBA Finals MVP.
That was back in January and good for Perkins, he realized a slip has been made and he made a public apology directed at Durant. He added that he considers KD a close pal and a brother.
He has the same tone to this day. Perkins admitted: "I did shoot some below-the-belt slugs that I wish I wouldn't have done ... I probably should have just took the blow that he delivered and just sent him a text."
On the question of why he picked Westbrook as the greatest player in OKC's history, Perkins said there is a big distinction on who is the greatest and who is the best. The former is for Westbrook and the latter is for the Durant.
It is the same way with the Warriors, he added, explaining that for the Dubs the greatest is no doubt Stephen Curry while the best player when KD was with the club for three seasons was Durant.
"We all know that KD is the best player, in my opinion, to wear a Warriors jersey. We all know that KD was the best Thunder to wear a Thunder jersey," Perkins was reported as saying.
However, Fadeaway World said the thoughts shared by Perkins should be taken "with a grain of salt," adding that the big man is known to fire up controversy at every chance and his penchant for sparring with NBA players is well documented.
