Despite only releasing the Galaxy Z Flip in February, it seems Samsung is already working on its follow-up. Keen-eyed tech watchers spotted a new patent that made its way to the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO).

In a report by Dutch tech website LetsGoDigital, the next Galaxy Z Flip is expected to ship with three rear cameras, which is a significant upgrade from the current model's dual-lens setup. If the new feature ends up on the device, it will bring the Galaxy Z Flip 2 in line with this year's flagship smartphones.

Diagram images of the Galaxy Z Flip 2 were posted on the website, implying that the phone will come in two variants, which were labeled Model A and Model B.

The Model A design shows the rear part of the phone with a horizontal triple camera system. The flash unit and secondary screen are also available alongside the three shooters. As for Model B, its three cameras are placed vertically. This design allows the inclusion of a bigger secondary display. Design-wise, there aren't many changes, though the patent filing does not detail any info about the specs and other features.

Another detail worth noting is how Samsung's choice of camera alignment seems to affect the mini OLED display on the device's rear. On Model A, the outer screen looks indistinguishable from the current Galaxy Z Flip, while the vertical implementation on Model B seems to allow room for a wider display.

It's a welcome change if the report turns out true, but for now, we're taking it with a grain of salt. A patent filing, after all, is not a guarantee that a feature or design will materialize.

Samsung could also be just covering its bases at this point. But a tri-cam system or a larger rear display on the Galaxy Z Flip 2 does make the foldable phone more eye-catching. The patent also gives us a rough idea of the company's direction in terms of design, should they make revisions to the current model.

In other Samsung news, the South Korean tech giant announced there would be a new Galaxy Note and Galaxy Fold models arriving in the second half of 2020. The news paved the way for speculations that the company may unveil the Exynos 992 powered Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Fold 2 in the third quarter of this year.

More Samsung news is expected soon.
