There is little doubt that Percy Jackson fans are still disappointed that there aren't more film adaptations of Rick Riordan's books. Although there were two movies that adapted the first two books of the Percy Jackson & the Olympians novel series, it looks like there were no plans to work on follow-ups to the franchise. Luckily, things have changed for the beloved books. It has just been confirmed that Disney+ is developing a TV series that will finally bring Percy Jackson back to life.
The good news comes from Rick Riordan himself who took to Twitter in an announcement video with his wife Becky Riordan. In the video, the author gave fans the news they have been hoping to hear for several years. "After a lot of hard work and a lot of support from you guys, Percy Jackson is coming to Disney+!" Riordan said. He then tweeted a longer message that provided more information on the upcoming series.
Rick Riordan first thanked fans for their continuing support for Percy Jackson in the past decade and pointed out that it was the fans who initially suggested that the book series should be adapted by Disney+. Not surprisingly, Riordan wrote that he completely agreed with the readers.
"We can't say much more at this stage but we are very excited about the idea of a live-action series of the highest quality, following the storyline of the original Percy Jackson five-book series, starting with The Lightning Thief in Season 1," Riordon wrote before adding that he will oversee the new series with his wife. "Rest assured that Becky and I will be involved in person in every aspect of the show."
Rick Riordan then confirmed that fans will hear more soon but they still need to continue developing the show. "There will be much more news in the future, but for now, we have a lot of work to do! Buckle up, demigods. It's going to be a fantastic, exciting ride!" he concluded.
Percy Jackson and The Olympians spans five books including The Lightning Thief, The Sea of Monsters, The Titan's Curse, The Battle of the Labyrinth, and The Last Olympian. The film adaptations starred Logan Lerman as the titular character, Alexandra Daddario as Annabeth Chase, and Brandon T. Jackson as Grover Underwood.
The planned Percy Jackson series has not yet been given an official release date. Stay tuned for more updates on this story.
