In April, the world was again stunned by the news after two domestic cats from New York City have tested positive of the coronavirus. Showing only mild respiratory symptoms, authorities said, the felines have contracted the virus after they were exposed to their owners who have also been infected by COVID-19.

With the recent news, more and more pet owners are filled with worries and questions. Once a cat has been infected by the coronavirus, is it possible that they will be able to transfer the virus to humans? How about to other cats? What should fur parents do to keep their cats protected from this virus?

CAN THE CORONAVIRUS SPREAD FROM CATS TO HUMANS?

Despite the increasing number of animals infected by the coronavirus at present, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is still certain there is nothing to worry about regarding this matter. The possibility of pets spreading the virus to people "is considered to be low".

According to health authorities, there is still no evidence as of the date that confirms the possibility of animals "playing a role in the spread of COVID-19". Person-to-person transmission is still considered the driver of the pandemic.

However, felines can sometimes become a carrier of other diseases, which could also possibly infect humans. Some of these diseases include giardiasis, cryptosporidiosis, and toxoplasmosis. Given this reason, it is indeed crucial to observe proper hygiene in cuddling your pets, as shared by Inquirer.

IS FELINE-TO-FELINE TRANSMISSION POSSIBLE?

A laboratory experiment conducted by the experts at the University Of Wisconsin School Of Veterinary Medicine confirms this. For the study, experts have infected three felines with the coronavirus. Another three cats, all of which were tested negative, were then exposed to the first batch. After several days, all six cats have tested positive with COVID-19.

Experts say, based on the data, the cats that were included in the study were not showing any symptoms of the coronavirus at all. Researchers were also still unsure whether how the virus was transmitted among them.

HOW TO KEEP YOUR CATS PROTECTED AND SAFE AGAINST THE VIRUS?

To keep your cat healthy and COVID-free, it is crucial to treat them with love, as advised by National Geographic. Give them nutritious food and clean water only. Never let sick family members touch or be close to them at all times.

Also, your cats must maintain social distance especially towards people they don't know. When walking outside, it is important to wash their paws or give them a bath to wash off possible virus contamination before letting them enter the house.
