Princess Diana was loved by many. In fact, the Princess of Wales’ impact is still being remembered and cherished until today, over 20 years after her tragic passing.
That being said, it is quite understandable that Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall had a hard time with the public. Aside from dealing with being seen as the one who ruined Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s marriage, Camilla also has to try to make her own path to avoid being linked to the much-loved People’s Princess.
Royal expert Daisy McAndrew shared on Channel 5 documentary, Charles and Camilla: King and Queen in waiting that it was hard for the Duchess of Cornwall to choose a charity to support as most of the causes that she’s very passionate with were connected with Princess Diana.
Daisy McAndrew also said that Camilla had to "be careful not to tread on Diana's image or Diana's favorite subjects or charities.” If Camilla would choose charities that were linked to Princess Diana, people would think that she was trying to be like her. The Duchess of Cornwall was already dubbed as a husband stealer, she definitely wouldn’t want to be called a charity stealer as well.
Prince Charles and Camilla had been married for 15 years but their romance started long before that. The pair met in 1971 at a polo match in Windsor, where they instantly clicked.
Camilla was in an on-and-off-again relationship with army officer Andrew Parker-Bowles at the time. Despite her romantic connection with Prince Charles, Camilla went on to marry her first husband in 1973.
Prince Charles, on the other hand, started dating a much younger Princess Diana in 1980. A year later, they got married at St Paul's Cathedral.
But despite having their own spouses, Prince Charles and Camilla, reportedly, never stopped seeing each other. Their side relationship obviously put a strain on the marriage of Prince and Princess of Wales. It was only a matter of time when the public noticed that something was wrong in their union.
In 1993, Prince Charles and Princess Diana announced the end of their marriage. And in 1995, Princess Diana famously said that “there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded."
Prince Charles and Camilla got married in April 9, 2005. The Duchess of Cornwall will be Queen of Consort when the Prince of Wales becomes King.
