Brown explained that the exploration of his past is similar to what happened in season 1 finale, wherein they went to Memphis to find out where about his family and where he came from. He said This Is Us season 5 may deliver a story similar to that, but it would be unique than that.
The new season will also explore Miguel-Rebecca's connection, Kevin and Madison becoming parents, as well as the feud between Kevin and Randall. These are just some of the stories shown in some of the flash-forward scenes.
But aside from Brown's Randall, the upcoming installment will also explore Chrissy Metz's Kate Pearson's past. The character has also dealt with different problems over the past years, such as losing his father and having a toxic relationship with Marc.
This Is Us season 5 will likely reveal other secrets from Kate's past, which could cause chaos along the way. Mertz told Deadline what could be these secrets, including why she opted not to use food but used substance instead.
Something may have also happened to Kate, leading to huge changes in the flash-forward. The character has faced a lot of battles and these battles may further continue. According to Mertz, Kate's struggles will be one of the central themes of the next season.
Meanwhile, although This Is Us season 5 has been confirmed, there are still a lot of uncertainties when it comes to its future. For instance, it's still unknown when the filming will begin, considering the current situation of the world due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
CarterMatt noted the upcoming installment may not be arriving until around late fall or early 2021. There could be a potential delay as everything depends on the real-life health crisis. The cast and crew may likely start filming as soon as the situation gets back to normal.
