The Sony Xperia 1 II hardly renders something new on the outside with most of the improvements coming from within. The latest flagship phone focuses on its built-in rear cameras, something that has been getting good reviews.

The Sony Xperia 1 II is set to come out in Japan in the coming days. KDDI will be offering the new flagship starting May 22 while NTT Docomo is expected to follow soon. No official release date on NTT Docomo's end has been announced as of this writing. The suggested retail price for the upcoming Sony mobile phone is reportedly around $1,243.

From the revealed specs, the Sony Xperia 1 II seems reasonable enough to buy. The device boasts of a 6.5-inch 4K OLED display (1644x3840 pixels) and will depend on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC. It will be backed by 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. It will also come with the usual biometric fingerprint scanner (at the side) and a non-removable 4,000 mAh battery with fast charging capability. But the real story behind the flagship is the main cameras.

The Sony Xperia 1 II will have a triple 12 MP camera setup aside from a 0.3 MP sensor for added depth. People who love to take selfies have also not been forgotten. The phone comes with an 8 MP front-facing camera - not that high-end but decent enough for video conferencing and selfie-shots, GSM Arena reported. Aside from that, Sony has not forgotten to stay with the times, arming the Xperia 1 II with 5G capability.

The Sony Xperia 1 II was officially unveiled back in February, way ahead of the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. Notable from the brand name alone is that it veers away from the usual Xs and Zs that past models carried. Considering its predecessors did not fare well, it will be interesting if Sony has finally come up with a phone that will impress the consumer market.

But so far, the camera system has been lauded. Among the ones who were able to put the triple camera to the test was Nick Didlick. Snapping photos is important in his job as a journalist and Didlick showed off what the Sony Xperia 1 II could do in a YouTube video.

The only thing missing right now is when the Sony Xperia 1 II will be available in the global market. It has slowly been coming out in select regions and the rest of the world is eager to see when they can check it out locally. Given the COVID-19 situation, that may take some time.
