BTS has continuously preached that everyone should love themselves. But for Jimin, it was quite a struggle for him to love himself at the beginning of their career.
When they were younger, Jimin was very critical and hard on himself. The BTS star doesn’t give himself a slack and would always see his mistakes rather than the things that he did well. And because of that, the “Promise” singer would break down and get upset with himself most of the time.
During The Wings tour in 2017, Jimin’s voice cracked twice during the rehearsal and it ruined his feelings about his whole performance. He also pointed out that his mic fell off. Even though the staff assured him that he didn’t mess up, Jimin’s face still shows how upset he was about his error. (Watch the clip here).
“Others could say that it’s not a bid deal, but that one thing makes me feel guilty. And I get so stressed out because of that one thing,” Jimin said during one of the interviews.
Also, Jimin wanted to look good for the fans, but he wasn’t confident with his looks in the past and decided to do something about it. The BTS star skipped meals while doing hardcore training, thinking that it would make him lose weight fast. Instead, his health suffered and he fainted because of his unhealthy diet.
But then Jimin started to learn what BTS has been teaching their fans since day one — to love themselves. In 2019, the BTS star revealed that he has changed the way he handles his mistakes and flaws. Instead of getting upset over them, he would tell himself to do better next time.
“But now, of course, I don’t feel great about making mistakes, but ‘Please wait just a bit more, I’ll try and get better soon,’ this is what I keep saying in my head,” Jimin said during a previous VLive with RM.
In Episode 5 of BTS’s new docuseries Break The Silence, Jimin’s mental glow up was highlighted even more. During BTS’s LOVE YOURSELF: SPEAK YOURSELF tour, Jimin’s lost his voice due to throat pain. Although he cried on stage because he was upset that he couldn’t sing well for the fans, the behind the scenes proved that the unfortunate situation didn’t break his spirit like it would before.
“It’s true that I didn’t do a good job, but I don’t think I was overcome with despair or regretful or self-critical,” Jimin shared. “I just accepted the circumstances.”
