While Queen Elizabeth is still actively serving as the monarch, a time will come that she will have to give up her reign. And when Prince Charles becomes king, a lot of changes in the titles will happen, and one particular title that Kate Middleton may carry will make history.
When Prince Charles becomes the king of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms, it is possible that he will pass his Prince of Wales title onto Prince William. This decision will make Kate Middleton the first royal to use the Princess of Wales title since Princess Diana.
Although Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall is entitled by law to use the Princess of Wales title when she married Prince Charles in 2005, she chose not to use it because of the association with the Prince of Wales’ first wife. Camilla garnered a lot of hate when her romantic link to Prince Charles ended his marriage with Princess Diana, so not using the Princess of Wales title appears to be the best option to avoid even more criticism.
Meanwhile, Prince William received a series of titles when he married Kate Middleton in 2011. But even though the Duke of Cambridge will be adding a lot of titles to his name when Prince Charles becomes King, giving him the Prince of Wales title is not automatic as the future king will decide if he will pass it or not.
“The title of Prince of Wales is not assumed automatically by the heir to the throne, and remains within the gift of the monarch,” royal expert Iain MacMarthanne said. He then added that Queen Elizabeth gave his eldest son the title in 1958.
Since Prince William is set to inherit more titles as Prince Charles ascends to the throne, a previous report shared that one title may be removed from him. Queen Elizabeth appointed the Duke of Cambridge to the position of Lord High Commissioner. But since it is a one-year appointment, there is a high chance that the prince will temporarily step away from the role as he and Kate Middleton will take more engagements in the future.
Prince William is the second in the line of succession to the British throne. However, many believe that the Duke of Cambridge is going to be King sooner than expected considering the age of his father Prince Charles. He and Kate Middleton are also ampig up their royals duties during the coronavirus pandemic, earning them a lot of praise from the public.
